This exhibition is a retrospective of Shinro Ohtake's path, born and raised in Tokyo during the high-growth period, based on seven themes: "self/other," "memory," "time," "transition," "dream/retina," "layers," and "sound.
Since his spectacular debut in the early 1980s, Shinro Ohtake (1955- ) has been a front-runner in the field of painting, prints, drawings, sculpture, video, picture books, sound, essays, installations, and large buildings. In recent years, he has participated in two major international exhibitions, Documenta (2012, Germany) and the Venice Biennale (2013, Italy), and has earned an international reputation as one of the leading contemporary Japanese artists.
This exhibition, the first large-scale retrospective of his work since "Zen-kei 1955-2006" in 2006, is composed of approximately 500 works, including those that have been exhibited in international exhibitions, based on seven themes. The exhibition will trace the artist's nearly half-century of work based on the theme of "what is already there," and will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of his works without regard to chronological order, providing an opportunity to explore the brain of a strong personality who continues to run.
