Shinsengumi Exhibition 2022

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished
The Shinsengumi was a political group formed in Edo on February 4, Bunkyu 3 (1861), based on the roshigumi (a group of samurai), and aimed to achieve the goal of honorable exclusion of the barbarians. While belonging to the Aizu clan and responsible for maintaining public order in Kyoto, Isamu Kondo, the head of the Shinsengumi, engaged in political activities as an influential mediator between the Hitotsubashi, Aizu, and Kuwana (Ichiai Kuwana) forces. In the Boshin War, he fought on the side of the Shogunate until the end and moved to Tohoku and Hakodate (Hakodate) to live through turbulent times. Until the present day, the Shinsengumi have been portrayed in novels, anime, dramas, and movies as a familiar and familiar presence.

On the other hand, in recent years, research and studies of the Shinsengumi and their surroundings have been conducted in the field of history, and new materials have been uncovered, revealing a different image of the Shinsengumi from the one known from novels and other sources.

This exhibition takes into account the latest research findings and explores the real image of the Shinsengumi in the Aizu and Kyoto areas, which are deeply connected to the Shinsengumi.
