Exhibition spaces are shaped through an attentiveness to the presence and subtle aura of things—considering the relationships between object and object, object and space, and object and viewer. Such delicate forms of communication are, in fact, part of our everyday experience, often carried out unconsciously. Shiori takes its title from the practice of breaking a branch along a mountain path to mark one’s way, serving as a subtle guidepost for returning to such modes of perception. By focusing on the inherent qualities of the tableau format—its frame, boundaries, and depth—what emerges are things that are difficult to see, hear, or grasp. The works presented here reflect an attitude of carefully engaging with such elusive phenomena and searching for their form.

Each of the three participating artists attends closely to quiet, easily overlooked elements of daily life, as well as to presences that, while invisible, undeniably exist. Through their practices, these are rendered visible and transformed into expressions.
Yukiko Oyama works within the classical rectangular framework of painting, creating as if in quiet “play” within its bounds. While grounded in structure, her practice embraces instability and fluctuation—holding within it what cannot be fully contained.
Keisuke Kagetsu focuses on the subtle resonances between elements such as a single brushstroke and materials like washi paper, wooden frames, and light. As suggested by the phrase “beside a brushstroke,” he carefully draws out the quiet presence that exists adjacent to the primary subject, reawakening a sense of beauty embedded within the everyday.
Ayako Kikuchi works across multiple media, including painting, sculpture, and photography, examining herself as part of nature while exploring the liminal spaces—awai—that exist within the flow of daily life. Her practice seeks to capture phenomena that arise at the boundaries where landscape, consciousness, custom, and emotion intersect—things that resist clear definition.

As the perspectives of these three artists overlap, their attentiveness to the subtle gradually gathers strength, emerging as a quietly compelling form of expression.
While works characterized by bold colors and striking textures may reach the viewer instantly, the works in this exhibition approach more slowly yet steadily, permeating perception and thought with quiet persistence.

In a time where efficiency and immediacy are often prioritized, this exhibition invites viewers to pause, attend to subtle sensations and fluctuations that might otherwise be overlooked, and reconsider the world as if taking a slow, deliberate breath.
It is our hope that Shiori may serve as a modest guidepost toward such a moment.
