Shizubi Project has been introducing various contemporary art forms in the open space of the entrance hall where many people pass by, and the 8th exhibition will feature works by Koichi Matsufuji (1973-), who has been focusing on the relationship between humans and the natural environment using glass as a material.
Fascinated by glass, which can change its shape in a melting furnace, Matsufuji began working with uranium glass after the nuclear power plant accident caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The aggregates of various shapes, both large and small, look serene, reminiscent of a city with buildings standing neatly in a row. However, when UV light is shone on them, they suddenly emit a mysterious fluorescent light. The contradictory expressions and the fragility of glass, which can break if excessive force is applied, are directly connected to the danger of uranium itself, which can be a boon or a threat depending on how people interact with it.
In this exhibition, Matsufuji will present his uranium glass installation "The Beginning of the End of the World," as well as photographs using bubbles of glass as lenses and new work that combines the sound of Shizuoka's waves and glass.
