Shoji Ueda's "Soundless Memory", a collection of works from two trips to Europe, was published in 1974, and apart from the story of his first trip abroad in 1972, when he felt the light and air similar to that of the San-in region, and enthusiastically snapped his shutter, the publication of this book is an episode that eloquently illustrates the photographer's commitment to his work.
Upon his return from his first trip, Ueda immediately decided to produce a book of his photographs. However, just before going to press, Ueda abruptly dropped the idea of publication and visited Europe in November 1973, the same season as the previous year. The results of this second photo shoot were added to the book, and it was not until August 1974 that the book was published.
This exhibition is the first attempt to introduce the images included in the “Soundless Memory" photo book and to identify, as much as possible, whether each was taken the first time or the second time, and even the location of the photo shoot. By tracing the fragments of the "memory images," as it were, left behind by Ueda, visitors will be able to experience the melancholic and nostalgic appeal of this collection of photographs.
Open on a public holiday Tuesday but closed on the following day. Closed during the winter (from late December to the end of February) and between the exhibitions.
