Shunei Nishida
Shunei Nishida, a member of the Japan Art Institute and the Japan Art Academy (1953-), presented the monumental Japanese painting "Phoenix," created during his approximately one-year stay on Yakushima Island, at an exhibition commemorating his retirement from Musashino Art University in 2023. Initially measuring about 40 meters up to the second chapter at that time, the final work evolved into an unprecedented masterpiece with a total length exceeding 70 meters, structured in six chapters.

Nishida was captivated by Yakushima Island, known as a World Natural Heritage site, particularly by its rich primeval forest. The forest symbolizes an irreplaceable existence for humans, and the painter strongly empathizes with the precious nature and the activities of life dwelling there. By gazing at this unique nature, he crafted a magnificent narrative centered around the themes of "symbiosis between humans and nature" and the "cycle of life."

In this exhibition, the evolving masterpiece that Nishida continues to work on as a lifelong project will be unveiled, incorporating new inspirations gained after the initial presentation.
