Shunei Nishida: Phoenix

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished

Artists

Shunei Nishida
To attempt a huge Nihonga painting, 70 meters, one of the largest paintings in Japan, Shunei Nishida moved to Yakushi-ma Island, where he painted Phoenix on a vast scale, moved and inspired by the unspoiled forests there. This exhibition, with Phoenix as its core, traces the works from Nishida’s youthful starting point and, through studying abroad in India, his depictions of landscapes, animals, human beings, and flowers with deep affection and delicate brushwork in the Japanese spirit of treating all of creation as divine.
