HAGIWARA PROJECTS is pleased to present a solo show by new works of Shunsuke Imai opening November 5, 2025.
Shunsuke Imai paints images that evoke fabric fluttering in the wind. Drawing inspiration from the colors and forms found in everyday life, he transforms them into paintings, which sometimes expand further into sculpture or moving image works. His practice moves fluidly between abstraction and figuration, and across two and three dimensions, giving rise to a unique and expansive artistic vision.
The stripes, reminiscent of a flag swaying in the breeze, can appear like camouflage or even a national emblem, inviting viewers to imagine a range of associations. Layers of color generate illusions of depth and shifting planes, revealing a structure that lightly traverses opposites such as figure and ground, image and material, illusion and reality.
Another key aspect of Imai’s work is his approach of developing multiple paintings and works in different formats from a single motif. This strategy suggests that each image embodies countless possibilities, offering viewers an experiential sense of the multiplicity contained within a single visual form.
