Simon Yotsuya is highly regarded not only in Japan but also internationally as a leading expert in ball-jointed dolls. He started making dolls at the age of 10 and honed his skills under the guidance of puppet makers like Puppe Kawasaki and Toshirou Hayashi. In 1965, he came across photographs of Hans Bellmer's ball-jointed dolls in a magazine called "Shinfujin" introduced by Ryunosuke Shibazawa, which deeply impressed him. He realized that dolls should move with joints and represent human forms, leading him to abandon previous doll-making methods and embark on self-study to pioneer a new horizon in ball-jointed doll expression. He continues to question his existence by pursuing the essence of "what is a doll."
This exhibition showcases works spanning half a century, including "Eve of the Future and Past" (1973), "Angel - Dedicated to Ryunosuke Shibazawa" (1990), as well as recent dolls, unreleased headpieces, busts, and new pastel paintings.
