Simose Art Museum has newly acquired works by three contemporary artists this year: Sam Falls, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Miwa Komatsu. This two-part exhibition introduces these new acquisitions and their creators. The first part will feature Sam Falls and Tomokazu Matsuyama.
Sam Falls, born in 1984 in the United States, has garnered attention in recent years for his practice of arranging branches, leaves, and flowers on canvas, sprinkling them with dye, and exposing them to sunlight, rain, and wind to transform them into paintings. The vivid colors and familiar motifs make for eye-catching works, but Falls' process also reflects his interest in the basic principles of photography; his awareness of the relationship between viewer, artwork, and artist; and his deeper meditations on nature and the transience of life. This exhibition will be the first in Japan to present his monumental work Spring to Fall (2023–2024), measuring over 3.6 meters in height and 45 meters in width, which took more than a year to complete.
Tomokazu Matsuyama, born in Gifu Prefecture in 1976, is an internationally active contemporary artist based in New York. Matsuyama creates his works through a unique method of “sampling,” in which he reconstructs a wide range of artistic and popular motifs drawn from both Eastern and Western cultures. His canvases reflect intricately intertwined faces of contemporary society, while his use of vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail result in a distinctive worldview. His powerful visual language has captivated audiences around the world. This exhibition introduces part of his global practice, highlighting two newly acquired paintings alongside Soul Miner (2025), a large-scale sculptural work first unveiled at his debut solo exhibition in Tokyo.
