Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is preparing for the "Sugawara Michizane 1125th Anniversary Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Grand Festival" in 2027, which marks 1125 years since the enshrinement of Sugawara no Michizane (Tenjin-sama) at Dazaifu. In anticipation of this milestone, and for the first time in 124 years, the shrine began extensive renovations of its Important Cultural Property, the Main Shrine, in May 2023. During the approximately three-year renovation period, visitors are being welcomed at a temporary shrine.
The design of this temporary shrine, which serves as Tenjin-sama's residence during the renovations, was entrusted to Sou Fujimoto, one of Japan's leading contemporary architects, and his firm, Sou Fujimoto Architects.
As the sacred site of the Tenjin faith, uniquely built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine posed a significant challenge: how could modern architecture respond to its rich history and tradition? The temporary shrine, a testament to Fujimoto's confrontation with this profound question, stands as an innovative structure with a forward-looking design, captivating all who visit.
This exhibition traces the journey to the realization of the temporary shrine through a first-time display of plans, models, and photographs.
