Sozenji's Traditional Ink Rubbings - A Cultural Heritage Linked by the Art of Conservation and Restoration

Toki City Historical Museum of Mino Ceramics
Finished
The temple was founded in 1354 by Yorishige, the first generation of the Myomitsuji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, in Tsumae-cho, Gifu by the third generation of the Eihoji school of Zen Buddhism, under the guidance of Zenji Kaijitsu.

The temple has two ink brush strokes, "Konoso Myojai Ink Strokes" and "Kai" by Muso Kunishi (both important cultural properties of Gifu Prefecture), which have been preserved and handed down for about 700 years since the temple was founded while undergoing repeated repairs. In recent years, the damage to these works has become so severe that conservation and repair work was carried out in 2021 with the support and assistance of the Sumitomo Foundation, Gifu Prefecture, and the city of Gifu.

Many of the cultural properties in Japan are made of fragile materials, and regular repairs are important to ensure that they will be handed down to future generations. The technician is responsible for the conservation and repair of cultural and artistic objects made of silk and paper, such as paintings and old books, and is called the "armorer". Modern-day "armorers" repair cultural and social properties based on traditional techniques while incorporating scientific opinions.

This exhibition and related events will introduce the changes in the works before and after restoration, and at the same time, the exhibition will convey the results of the restoration process and the techniques and thoughts of the "conservators" who were involved in the restoration.
