Special Exhibition Commemorating the 120th Anniversary of Jiro Shirasu's Birth - Jiro Shirasu, Masako Shirasu: Life at Buaiso

Matsuzakaya Art Museum
Finished
Jiro Shirasu (1902-1985) was a man of English manners and culture who devoted himself to the reconstruction of Japan after World War II. Masako Shirasu (1910-1998) was a woman of many talents as an essayist who loved kimono and antiques and was familiar with the classical performing arts through Noh from a young age. Jiro and Masako, who married each other after falling in love at first sight, respected each other and cherished each day of their lives together. Jiro and Masako interacted with a variety of people active in their time, including Shigeru Yoshida, Hideo Kobayashi, and Jiro Aoyama. Their way of life continues to resonate with and influence many people today.

This exhibition focuses on the family's way of life at Buaiso (Machida City, Tokyo), where the two moved and lived for the rest of their lives. It introduces Jiro Shirasu's favorite articles, clothes, handmade tools, and historical documents of his efforts to rebuild Japan after the war with his country gentleman's spirit, as well as Masako's beloved kimonos, obis, antiques, accessories, and items related to Masako's family, the Kabayama family. In addition, approximately 200 items from the collection of the former Shirasu Residence Buaiso, including Masako's writings and manuscripts, which she captured with her keen sensibility while traveling throughout Japan as an essayist, will be introduced to discover the beauty and spirit found in Japanese culture and seasonal lifestyles.
