Special Exhibition Commemorating the 750th Anniversary of the Founding of Kanazawa Bunko: Kanazawa Bunko Books - The Story of Wandering Books

Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa-Bunko Museum
Until Jan 18
Approximately 750 years ago, Hojo Sanetoki, a member of the Hojo clan who served as regents of the Kamakura Shogunate, actively collected valuable Japanese and Chinese classics from both within Japan and abroad, and established a library (fumikura) called the "Kanazawa Bunko" to house them. The collection of books housed in this library later came to be known as the "Kanazawa Bunko books." With the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate, the Kanazawa Hojo clan shared its fate, but the "Kanazawa Bunko" was subsequently placed under the jurisdiction of Shomyoji Temple, the family temple of the Kanazawa Hojo clan, and has been preserved and passed down to the present day, along with the temple's heritage.

Since the Muromachi period, the Kanazawa Bunko books have been sought after by many powerful people due to their value, and they have come to face the risk of being scattered and lost. One person who had a strong interest in the Kanazawa Bunko books and actively collected them was Tokugawa Ieyasu. The excellent classical books collected by Ieyasu, including the Kanazawa Bunko books, were passed down as "Suruga Goyagehon" to his son Yoshinao, who would later become the first lord of Owari, and many of them are currently kept in the Yoza Bunko in Nagoya.

This exhibition, which was held under these circumstances, is a collaboration between the two museums, which have preserved and passed down the Kanazawa Bunko collection of classic books, a source of pride for Japan around the world, and will introduce the efforts to preserve and pass down the collection and its historical significance. All five of the Kanazawa Bunko books, designated Important Cultural Properties, which have been handed down at the Yoza Bunko, will be returning to their homeland at the Kanazawa Bunko.
