In the late Heian period, frequent internal conflicts, disasters, and outbreaks of epidemics caused disorder and exhaustion in society. Honen (Honen-bo Genku, 1133-1212), who studied at Mount Hiei and encountered the teachings of Zendo (613-681), a devotee of the Amida Buddha from the Tang Dynasty in China, founded the Jodo sect in the year 1175. He preached that anyone, regardless of their status, could attain salvation and be reborn in the Pure Land by chanting the name of the Amida Buddha. His teachings gained support from people ranging from nobles to commoners and have been passed down continuously to the present day.
This exhibition, marking the 850th anniversary of the founding of the Jodo sect in the year 2024, traces the 850-year history of the Jodo sect, from Honen's establishment of the sect to the founding of various sects and the establishment of doctrines by his disciples. The exhibition also explores the significant development brought about by the Tokugawa shogunate's patronage. It features precious national treasures and important cultural properties held by Jodo sect temples nationwide. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to delve into the lives of Honen and his disciples, who sought universal salvation during challenging times, and to encounter cultural properties that have been carefully preserved and passed down.
