Spring 2023 Collection Room - Fascinating Showa Modern

Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art
Finished
The Collection Room allows visitors to fully experience the fascinating aspects of Kyoto art through special exhibits featuring popular artists and themes that represent Kyoto.

From the Meiji to Taisho periods, Japan underwent rapid industrialization under the influence of advanced Western countries and modernized rapidly with the influx of new culture. In particular, people's lifestyles changed, especially in urban areas, and the country entered the Showa Period (prewar period) with a unique blend of Japanese and Western styles, from architecture and interior design to fashion and lifestyle. At the same time, Western-style paintings and Japanese-style paintings at government exhibitions actively depicted the modern customs of the time, and in the field of crafts, many works were influenced by Art Deco, which was popular in the West, and were accepted as the art of the new era. This exhibition focuses on paintings and craft works from the early Showa period (around the 1930s), including 1933 when the museum opened, and introduces works that captured the "modern" spirit of the time.
