Stories of Indigo and Safflower

Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts
Finished
Indigo and red, indispensable colors in Japanese color culture, are derived from the indigo plant and the safflower plant. Traditional indigo and safflower dyeing, which require time-consuming processes, have each developed their own unique culture. This exhibition introduces the history of the two colors and dyeing techniques, as well as the designs and clothing that were born from them, and looks back on their appeal.
