Style of Modern Girls

Itami City Museum of Art, History and Culture
Finished
The word "modern girl" denotes a new type of woman that emerged in Europe and the United States following World War I. In Japan, around the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era, it began to be used in the mass media to describe women who had short hair and wore Western-style clothing and women with new ways of thinking. This exhibition places its spotlight on the women of the Taisho era and offers insights into the evolution of their mindset through the lens of magazines, advertisements, everyday products, and various other aspects of their lives.
