Sylvie Auvray
The exhibition features Sylvie Auvray's latest ceramic works created during her artist-in-residence program at the Shiga Prefectural Ceramic Cultural Park (Koka, Shiga Prefecture) starting this fall, as well as three large paintings created in Paris.

Auvray began her career in painting and has since broadened his range of expression to sculpture and ceramics. She has exhibited at prestigious museums and galleries in Japan and abroad, including the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris), Gagosian Gallery (Geneva), and Daichi Project (Los Angeles), where she has received high acclaim. She has also participated in the Chinati Foundation Artist-in-Residence program established by Donald Judd (Marfa, Texas), where she exhibited alongside the work of John Chamberlain, one of America's leading sculptors.

Her first solo exhibition in Japan, "The Beast and the Broom," held at Soukei (Kyoto, Japan) in 2021, featured works and drawings based on the motif of brooms. "The Beast and the Broom" was an exhibition full of Auvray's typical intellectual humor, combining ceramics with materials such as brooms used in daily life and familiar trees that Auvray finds beautiful through daily life, and quoting characters from picture story shows such as Pinocchio and commedia dell'arte.

The title of the exhibition, "Marguerites," refers to the antique marguerite flower-shaped plates that Auvray brought from Paris during her stay in Japan. The Marguerite-shaped platters and objects that reference the floral pattern are fired in the climbing kilns of the Ceramic Forest and convey the unique interest of this exhibition, which captures the history and expression of Shigaraki ware, a kiln site.

The ceramic work "Beast," which forms the core of this exhibition, is based on the motif of an imaginary animal that she has held dear and close to her heart for many years. More lovable and slightly frightening than terrifying, the Beast is more like an imaginary friend, according to Auvray.

Auvray has been exhibiting "Beast" for many years, but this exhibition marks her first attempt to create a large object (over 180cm) that is full of power. In addition to the "Beast" series, the exhibition will also feature new works that combine ceramic and wood, reminiscent of vases and maracas. Auvray's figurative expression, which incorporates the uncontrollable act of "giving to fire" in ceramics as an element of his works, is imbued with mystery in its mysterious forms and expressions.
