Tadatsugu Matsui, the General Who Supported Ieyasu

Iwase Bunko Library
Finished
Tadatsugu Matsui, a military commander from Kyoniwa-go, Hazu-gun, Mikawa Province (present-day Oyamada, Kira-cho, Nishio City), was a member of the Tojo Matsudaira clan and became the founder of the Matsudaira Shuhomori family of feudal lords through his service under Tokugawa Ieyasu.

He was on the front lines in Ieyasu's major battles such as the Anegawa, Mikatagahara, and Nagashino. For his achievements, he received the Matsudaira family name and continued to support Ieyasu on the "military" side until his death in 1583 as lord of Mimaihashi Castle in Numazu.

Later, Tadatsugu's descendants supported the Tokugawa shogunate as feudal lords, including three senior retainers, and after serving as lord of Sasayama Castle in Tanba and Iwami Hamada Castle in Iwami Prefecture, he ended his life as lord of Kawagoe Castle.

This exhibition introduces the life of Tadatsugu Matsui, who achieved numerous military achievements under Ieyasu and rose from a minor lord to a feudal lord with the surname of Matsudaira, through numerous documents on display for the first time in Nishio City.

He was given the surname "Matsudaira" by Ieyasu around 1575, and at the same time he received the character "Yasushi" and took the name "Yasuchika," but in this exhibition, the name Tadatsugu Matsui is used instead.
