Tadayuki Naito, born in Asakusa, Tokyo in 1941, is 83 years old and currently resides in Kanagawa Prefecture. A representative photographer of Japan, he has produced series such as "Jazz," "Africa," "Japanese Gardens," and "Cherry Blossoms," among others. His body of work includes many iconic pieces.
In particular, his "Jazz" series features numerous live and candid shots of Miles Davis, capturing the atmosphere of that era through snap photography. A rare photograph taken in New York in 1985, featuring Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Clemente together, was included in the official catalog of the "Basquiat × Warhol Exhibition" held at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in France from April to August 2023.
Furthermore, his "Japanese Gardens" series, depicting the tranquility within Japan's famous temple and shrine gardens, was used for JR Tokai's campaign poster "Let's Go to Kyoto." His abstract representations of "Cherry Blossoms" express his bold yet delicate artistic vision and have been highly praised, with some pieces being housed in the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
In this exhibition, along with previously unreleased works like the "T-shaped 12-panel Symmetry" evoking kimono motifs and his "Cherry Blossoms" series featuring scenes from Kakunodate and Noh performances, we will also display recent works capturing themes of "life and death," "peace and love," and "prayer," using subjects such as "skeletons" and "clouds."
Additionally, the exhibition will showcase early works from Naito's career in New York, as well as rare snap photographs and record jackets that have not been widely exhibited before, offering a retrospective look at his origins and career.
From advertising photography to works born from his unique sensibility, Naito's pursuit of challenge and beauty continues unabated.
