Yumeji Takehisa
Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) was a poet-painter representative of Taisho Romanticism, and his pioneering role as a designer is also noteworthy. 1914 saw the opening of the Minatoya Ezoshi store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, where envelopes, chiyogami, woodblock prints, and other items designed by Yumeji became popular. Takehisa's designs can be seen not only on sundry goods but also on everyday items such as kimonos, which were a part of people's daily lives.

Takehisa, who had been interested in paintings and designs brought from foreign countries since the Meiji period (1868-1912), fused them with traditional Japanese patterns to create unique and romantic designs.

This exhibition traces the image sources of Takehisa's designs from his scrapbooks and introduces the forms of Takehisa's designs applied to Yumeji-style beauties. Also on view for the first time is one of Takehisa's Art Nouveau-influenced works, "Mushroom" on chiyogami paper, which is now in the museum's new collection.
