Galerie Taménaga Tokyo is pleased to present the exhibition “Takanori Oguiss and Maurice Utrillo — Captivated by the City Streets” from Saturday, September 5 to Sunday, September 27. Takanori Oguiss (1901–1986) spent most of his life in France, where he continued to paint cityscapes imbued with the traces of everyday life. Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955), meanwhile, was born and raised in France and became renowned for his poetic depictions of the stone walls and streets of Montmartre. This exhibition brings together approximately 25 oil paintings by these two masters who, working during the same period in the first half of the 20th century, each developed a distinctive perspective on the cityscapes of Paris and the changing scenes they encountered.
The cityscapes that captivated Oguiss and Utrillo extend far beyond the streets of Paris and Montmartre. From tranquil scenes of the French countryside, revealing a different character with each passing season, to Venice, where water and light come together in ever-changing harmony, the exhibition brings together a rich variety of landscapes that inspired both artists. Through their works, visitors can follow the journeys that shaped their artistic visions, discovering the distinctive colors of light, architectural textures, and unique atmospheres that characterize each place.
Kiyoshi Tamenaga, founder of Galerie Taménaga, first met Oguiss in 1957. From that time until the artist’s death in 1986 at the age of 84, the two maintained a close and warm friendship through exhibitions, the publication of art books, and other collaborations. Over the years, the gallery has organized more than 40 exhibitions devoted to Oguiss, including 12 solo exhibitions, such as Oguiss and Montmartre (1987) and Takanori Oguiss: 120th Anniversary of His Birth (2021).
Tamenaga also enjoyed a close relationship with the renowned art dealer Paul Pétridès. Through this connection, in 1967 he organized and presented Japan’s first major retrospective of Utrillo, hosted by The Mainichi Newspapers. The exhibition brought together approximately 150 exceptional works carefully selected from museums and private collections in Europe and the United States. It generated considerable interest within Japan’s art world and played an important role in introducing Utrillo’s work to Japanese audiences. This special exhibition has been made possible through the gallery’s longstanding commitment to presenting the work of both Oguiss and Utrillo.
