Artists

Takashi Yanase
This first major traveling exhibition celebrates Yanase Takashi (1919-2013), the creator of Anpanman. A consummate entertainer, Yanase was a multifaceted artist who worked as a manga artist, poet, children’s book author, illustrator, graphic designer, and editor. For him, bringing joy to others was life’s greatest pleasure.

Through his harsh wartime experiences, separation from family, and encounters with various people, Yanase constantly asked himself, “Why are we born, and how should we live?” His answer emerged in the form of a hero who, though perhaps not cool or flashy, could offer bread—anpan—to those truly in need.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Anpanman Museum in 2026, this exhibition features original artwork organized into themed sections: Understanding Yanase Takashi, Manga, Poetry, Picture Books/Yanase’s Fairy Tales, and Anpanman. We invite you to experience these inspiring works that continue to give us courage.
