Takehiro Iikawa's "Decorator Crab" series (named after a crab that mimics its surroundings) is known for its approachable style of expression, which contains sharp inquiries into our perceptions, impulses, and the institutional norms of art. Pieces such as mysterious sports bags placed on the floor, seemingly waiting for someone to pick them up, sculptures of cats with parts always hidden, preventing a full view, and installations where pushing what appears to be an exhibition wall reveals another space, have garnered attention in various art museums and projects.
This exhibition, coinciding with the release of Iikawa's first collection "Decorator Crab" (published by Sekiseisha and Sendai Mediatheque), presents project plans and drawings from previous projects, including those being unveiled for the first time, as well as previously rare photographic records by the artist himself. Additionally, it incorporates works filled with humor and insight that Iikawa has produced, ranging from early pieces to "Time Exercise Clock" (2006-), "Fade out, Fade up" (2012-), and "Winning Position Card" (2016-).
