Yumeji Takehisa
Fukuda Art Museum is happy to present a retrospective of the painter Takehisa Yumeji, who will celebrate the 140th anniversary of his birth and the 90th anniversary of his death in 2024.
In addition to the numerous paintings of beautiful women that dominated the art world and were known as “Yumeji-style beauties,” the exhibition will also showcase Yumeji’s many other works, including magazine illustrations, cover designs for sheet music, book bindings, haiku, and lyrics, all of which showcase the appeal of the artist as a creator who displayed a diverse range of talent.
This is the first time in about 12 years that the collection has been shown together. This is an exhibition that anyone as well as Yumeji fans can enjoy.

The Fukuda collection of works by Takehisa Yumeji is previously known as the ‘Kawamura Collection,’ which boasts 334 pieces collected by the late Kōjirō Kawamura (1901~1994, Honorary Director of the Shimonoseki City Art Museum), who was a direct friend of Yumeji.
Yumeji did not study under anyone and single-handedly established himself as a popular painter, and his life was not always smooth sailing. This exhibition introduces all aspects of Yumeji’s life, from his masterpieces such as the series Nagasaki 12 Views and 10 Women, which are key to the story of his life, the folding screen Travels and Seishunufu, to the original covers of Senoo and Nakayama Shinpei music scores, which are a delightful collaboration with music, and novels and haiku in which his literary talent was on display. We hope that visitors will discover a new side to Yumeji that is not confined to the framework of a beautiful painter.
