Japanese painter Tamako Kataoka is known for her unconventional compositions and bold use of color. This is the first exhibition of Kataoka's representative works, the "Tsurugamae" series.
Tamako Kataoka was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1905, graduated from a women's art school, and continued to create while working at a high school elementary school in Kanagawa Prefecture. 25 years old, she was accepted for the first time to the Inten Exhibition and later was promoted to the same group, establishing herself as a Japanese-style painter. At the age of 61, Kataoka became a professor at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, and together with her young students, began to create "Tsurugamae" with the determination to pursue a new style of Japanese-style painting.
This series, which Kataoka continued to paint for 38 years until 2004, can be considered her life's work. The works in this series depict various historical figures, including Shogun Takauji Ashikaga and Ukiyoe artist Hokusai Katsushika, with Kataoka's unique interpretation. This exhibition traces the history of Kataoka's work, introducing 43 works from the series as well as small drawings on view for the first time.
