Comedian Karateka Yabe Taro is also a manga artist. His debut work, "Landlord and Me" (2017, Shinchosha), which portrays the daily life of the landlord living on the first floor of his rented house with gentle humor, has gained support from generations. The series has exceeded 1.2 million copies and won the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize for Short Stories. Yabe's works, such as those depicting the relationship between the landlord and Yabe, and between Yabe and his father, meticulously portray the nuances of human relationships, particularly the relationship between two people, affirming the idea of "living as you are." With the observational eye and humor unique to comedians, Yabe's small stories are created with unreliable lines of drawing and words invite laughter and tears.
The exhibition will carefully explore works from "Landlord and Me" to "My Father" (both published by Shinchosha), "Tonakun in the Dressing Room" (Kodansha), the popular work "Manga Bokewai" (Kanki Publishing), and the latest work "Present and Me" (Shinchosha) using a method different from the experience of flipping through manga pages. Additionally, there will be a workshop "Giant Spaceship" supervised by Mitsuori Yabe, a picture book writer and the father depicted in "My Father," along with an exhibition of completed works. Furthermore, efforts will be made to immerse visitors into the story, such as screening scenes from the work using video and animation. Additionally, approximately 100 acrylic paintings specially created for this exhibition of "Landlord and Me" will be unveiled for the first time. Experience Yabe's warm gaze spreading throughout the venue, making this exhibition a heartwarming experience.
