In his artist statement, Tatsuya Sato mentions, "I create my works with reference to the forms of ancient characters. This time, I consciously distance myself from the meaning of the characters that serve as the subject (placing it in the subconscious). However, I am conscious of the nuances of 'sensations and emotions' (from Atsushi Nakajima's 'Toragari' (1934)). Regarding the color of the ink, I persistently explore it, continuing from my previous works. I aim for black or colored brushstrokes to convey meanings beyond the meaning of the characters."
It seems that Sato continuously strives to express the sensations derived from the ink's shades and shapes, going beyond the established meanings of characters (language) and surpassing the limited meanings they carry.
