Artists

Tetsugoro Yorozu
Tetsugoro Yorozu (1885-1927) was a painter who embraced the new trends of late Impressionism and Fauvism, leading the avant-garde movement in the Japanese art world from the end of the Meiji era through the Taisho period.

However, it is not widely known that Yorozu learned landscape painting during his youth and acquired basic painting techniques. Furthermore, after moving to Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1919, he found common ground between traditional Japanese painting techniques and their philosophy, known as Nanga (literati painting), and his artistic expression. He left behind a series of elegant works with a unique brushwork style.

This exhibition explores the lineage of regional painting culture from the predecessors of Yorozu, who nurtured his artistic talent, to him, and delves into the inherent artistic view found in his expression, where he discovered common ground between literati painting and Western painting and elevated it to a uniquely Japanese expression.
