Seventeen years have passed since Za-Koenji opened its doors in 2009. In that time, the theater has witnessed the Great East Japan Earthquake and the global pandemic. Now, in April 2026, amidst a complex and shifting global landscape, the theater undergoes its first change of designated manager. The countless memories and events layered within these walls endure, preserved through the theater and the lives woven into its story—both past and present. The theater as an echo for “theatrical memory”—a living site for its inheritance. The cast includes graduates and current students of the Creative Theatre Academy and hearing and Deaf staff who usually work in the café and office. Journeying alongside the people of Za-Koenji and their memories, we shift our perspective to momentarily transform the ‘here and now’ into a ku-do. A new tour-style production by artist Tetsuya Umeda.
