The 20th Anniversary of 'Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms' Fumiyo Kono Manga Original Drawings Exhibition: From One Town to a Country, and to the World
The manga "Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms" by Fumiyo Kono, a Hiroshima-born manga artist (1968-), marks its 20th anniversary this year. This exhibition will showcase all 92 original manga drawings entrusted by the artist, along with color illustrations and drafts.
The story revolves around the lives of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima 10 years after the bombing ("Town of Evening Calm"), and the daily lives of second-generation survivors living in Tokyo 42 years later ("Country of Cherry Blossoms Part 1") and 59 years later ("Country of Cherry Blossoms Part 2"). Although the artist initially felt uneasy about tackling the theme of the atomic bomb, she undertook the project with the hope of raising awareness among people outside the bomb-affected areas. The work received significant acclaim, winning the Grand Prize in the Manga Division at the 8th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2004 and the Newcomer Award at the 9th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2005. It also gained widespread recognition through adaptations into films, radio, and television dramas, reaching audiences beyond manga readers.
Additionally, this exhibition will feature episodes from the manga "In This Corner of the World" that depict the atomic bomb, providing a comprehensive look at Kono's work on this important historical topic.
