Taro Tanaka
Taro Tanaka (1911-92) was a sculptor from Nanao who created works such as "Seiun," a statue of Tohaku Hasegawa in front of Nanao Station. He first studied decorative sculpture of temple buildings, but later moved to Tokyo to study under Denchu Hirakushi, and was active mainly in the Inten Exhibition, starting with his first selection in 1936. After the dissolution of the sculpture division of the Inten Exhibition, he moved his activities to the Yuyukai and the Pacific Art Association, where he continued to exhibit his works until his death at the age of 80. His style can be broadly divided into figurative works based on realism and abstract works that evoke a mysterious spirituality, each with its own distinct flavor.

In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of his death, this exhibition features 46 works selected from the museum's collection to review his achievements and introduce his "journey" as a sculptor.
