From the Yokogawa family, who have been based in Higashi-Futami since the Muromachi period, a large amount of materials were donated to Akashi City in 2017. This exhibition introduces the activities of the Yokogawa family from the late Sengoku period to the Meiji and Taisho eras, focusing on the materials donated by the Yokogawa family.
The first member of the Yokogawa family to play a major role in history was Shigenobu Yokogawa. He achieved fame by defeating Hirako Shusen, a general of the Toyotomi faction, in the Battle of Hakurokuchi during the Winter Siege of Osaka. His achievements were recognized with commendations from Ieyasu Tokugawa and his lord, Tadanaga Ikeda. Descendants of Shigenobu continued to serve the Ikeda family, becoming samurai of the Tottori domain, but in Higashi-Futami, Akashi, the Yokogawa family, changed their surname to Muroya and continued to thrive. During the late Edo and Meiji periods, they excelled as doctors, scholars, and entrepreneurs, leaving their names in many companies such as Yokogawa Bridge and Yokogawa Electric, which still exist today.
The materials from the Yokogawa family's history offer insights into Japan's early modern and modern history.
