The Demon Painter and the Demon Collector: Kyosai Kawanabe and Takeshiro Matsuura

Seikado Bunko Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Kyosai Kawanabe et al.
The painter Kyosai Kawanabe and Takeshiro Matsuura, the explorer, antiquarian, and writer who gave Hokkaido its modern name, were two multi-talented figures active in the closing years of the feudal era. This exhibition unites Kawanabe's famous “Nirvana Painting of Takeshiro Matsuura" with the cultural treasures depicted in the painting, to consider these two men’s passion for ancient times.
