Hisui Sugiura
Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965) was a pioneer of Japanese graphic design. He is also known as the first president of Tama Imperial University of Fine Arts (now Tama Art University).

After graduating from the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Sugiura became acquainted with Art Nouveau designs through postcards and other materials brought back from France by Seiki Kuroda, a master of modern Western-style painting whom he looked up to as a teacher. He was also exposed to Art Deco and other trends in European art and design through his studies in Europe from 1922 to 1924.

While influenced by a variety of influences, Nonsui's sharp eye for detail, sometimes delicate and graceful, sometimes bold, powerful, and ever-changing style led him to produce posters for Calpis, Yamasa Soy Sauce, the Tokyo Metro, the Nagoya Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Railways (now JR), and others, as well as for “Tourist” the magazine of the Japan Tourist Bureau (JTB), and cigarette packages.

His ties to Mitsukoshi were particularly strong, and from the time he joined the company in 1908 until his retirement in 1934, he was solely responsible for the design of Mitsukoshi's posters and publicity magazines "Mitsukoshi Times" and "Mitsukoshi," and was often referred to as "Mitsukoshi's Hisui or Hisui's Mitsukoshi.

This exhibition will explore the appeal of Sugiura by showing a number of his works by field, including posters, book and magazine designs, advertisements, trademarks, package designs, and “Hisui Hyakka-fu," a collection of woodblock prints created with the utmost care by Sugiura, who was known for his sketching style.

Also on display are Sugiura's travel bag, a diary of his stay in Europe, sketches of his stay in Europe, a long lintel with a pattern based on the cover design of “Mitsukoshi," a reception dress reminiscent of the woman in Sugiura's poster, and a day suit by Chanel. The exhibition introduces the period in which Sugiura lived and his footprints from multiple perspectives.
