Manga artist Machiko Hasegawa (1920-1992) created numerous manga works, including "Sazae-san," over her approximately half-century-long career. However, her activities extended beyond manga to include book design, advertising design, and merchandise design. These works, which employ various techniques in a vividly colorful manner different from comic panel layouts, exhibit a timeless charm that does not fade across eras.
This exhibition focuses on the high design quality of Machiko Hasegawa's work. It will showcase her versatile artistic career, including title designs for newspaper and magazine serializations, book designs for her publications, advertisements for corporations and public agencies, and novelty goods and museum merchandise produced by the publishing company she founded with her sister, "Shimai-sha." Additionally, products featuring Sazae-san released by companies will also be displayed. With approximately 200 items including original drawings, merchandise, and related materials, this exhibition traces the aspects of Machiko Hasegawa as an illustrator and designer.
