The Development of Visual Culture in the Meiji Era: The Japanese Response to Foreign Arts and Culture

Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
The transition from the Edo period to the new era of the Meiji period transformed not only the political and economic system but also people's lives and culture in general. In the field of plastic arts, too, a variety of trends were born and developed. Information, technology, and images from the West opened up new ways of seeing, seeing, and showing things to the people of Japan at that time. The "civilization opening" was also a "visual opening.

This exhibition will focus on the collection of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of History, which holds a large number of arts and crafts from the Meiji period, and will also include works and materials from other museums and private collections, bringing together paintings, photographs, printed matter, sculpture, and crafts that show the unique expressions of the Meiji period. This exhibition will provide an opportunity to view the various expressions born from the contact between Japan and the West at the turning point of the era, and to discover a new aspect of Meiji art.
