The Elegant World of Kyoyaki - Nishikikozan and Obizan

Yokoyama Art Museum
Finished
Nishikikozan and Obiyama are the names of two traditional pottery makers, both active in Awataguchi, a Kyoto pottery production area located east of the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto. Sohei Nishikikozan VI and Yohei Obiyama IX created ceramics to Western tastes based on the refined aesthetic sense unique to Kyoto, and brought them to foreign trading posts in the port of Kobe in 1872, opening up export routes for Kyoyaki. Nishikikozan produced a wide variety of works, from the glittering Kyo Satsuma style started by the sixth generation to the Art Nouveau style of the seventh generation, while Obiyama created beautifully colored pieces with exquisite craftsmanship, and both won numerous awards at world expositions. The export of Awataguchi, led by Nishikikozan and Obiyama, rapidly grew to account for 90% of the total production in 1878 (the 11th year of the same period).

In this exhibition, visitors will enjoy the elegance of Miyakono export ceramics, which have spread to the world, with a focus on works by Nishikikozan and Obiyama from the Yokoyama Art Museum collection, along with masterpieces by master craftsmen of modern Kyoyaki pottery.
