With this exhibition, the activities of Creation Gallery G8 will draw to a close after 38 years in operation.
The gallery originally opened at Ginza 7-chome in 1985, under the name “G7 Gallery.” The Ginza area at the time was home to numerous art galleries, but there were no galleries that were dedicated to graphic design. G7 Gallery’s first exhibition was The Beginning ’85, a show featuring works by five art directors. In 1989, the gallery moved to its current location in Ginza 8-chome, from which time its name was changed to “Creation Gallery G8,” taking the name in part from Creation, the design magazine launched that year with Yusaku Kamekura serving as editor-in-chief. Since its start, the gallery has mounted more than 400 exhibitions, mainly focused on graphic design, functioning as a venue where creative artists could display their forays into new or established realms of visual expression. Following the gallery’s closing, on September 20 a brand-new venue – Art Center BUG – will open on the ground floor of Gran Tokyo South Tower, directly accessible from the Yaesu South Exit of Tokyo Station.
The last exhibition at Creation Gallery G8 will be The Ending ’23, a retrospective featuring the gallery’s exhibition posters through the years as well as video presentations of Talk Shows with creative artists. THE ENDING ’23 will also incorporate a succession of eight 3-day shows by 16 designers, illustrators, and artists with close ties to the gallery. Each show will feature works by two contributors and will be augmented by various small-scale events.
Creation Gallery G8’s overarching aim has been to serve as a venue where, through the medium of design, proposals could be made to enrich people’s lives, and where people could have encounters of all kinds. We hope that this last exhibition too will offer visitors an opportunity to make exciting discoveries and encounters with design.
