Tatami has long been an integral part of Japanese daily life. But how much do we really know about the materials, regions of origin, and the craftsmanship behind it?
The Commos Project presents “The Evolving Tatami: New Perspective” an exhibition that explores the cultural materials behind tatami—from raw material production and traditional manufacturing techniques to the makers who uphold this legacy. Together, we seek to uncover the untold stories of tatami and reimagine its potential in the context of contemporary living.
At Spiral Garden (Atrium), the exhibition features: ・A large-scale installation using 32 full tatami mats, ・An education area offering insights into the fundamentals of tatami, ・A product showcase highlighting contemporary furniture and design by both Japanese and international creators working in collaboration with master artisans.
Visitors are invited to engage all five senses through a series of immersive experiences, including:
・Workshops held in collaboration with Kumamoto, Japan's leading tatami-producing region, ・A Japanese tea workshop hosted by Sakurai Japanese Tea Experience Laboratory.
This four-day event invites us to reflect on the future of tatami—how we live with it, and how we might preserve and evolve it for generations to come.
