The Fate of Samurai in the Meiji Era: Matsue Domain

Matsue History Museum
Finished
During the Meiji era, the Matsue domain was abolished, giving rise to Shimane Prefecture, and samurai lost their stipends. Matsue Castle was dismantled, leaving only the keep. How did the former Matsue domain samurai navigate this rapidly changing era? Some became officials in Shimane Prefecture, like Masasuke Miura, who spent his entire life in Matsue Castle town, while others, like Hiroyuki Miura, his son, established themselves under the new school system and became a professor in the Department of Japanese History at Kyoto Imperial University. This explores the way of life of former Matsue domain samurai during the societal transformation of that era.
