Teikyo University's Department of Japanese Culture in the Faculty of Letters has faculty members who specialize in animation and conduct research as well as educational activities based on the results of such research. This exhibition introduces the depth and breadth of the history of animation through the results of their research and educational activities.

In Japan, animation films were introduced from Europe and the United States in 1912 and became extremely popular. People fascinated by these films began to produce animated films, and many of them were created in Japan as well. One of these creators was Kenzo Masaoka (1898-1988). Born in Osaka, where "Hanshin Modernism" was in full bloom, Masaoka took advantage of what he had learned as an art student and his experience in making dramatic films to plunge into the world of animation at the age of 30. Masaoka was one of the first in Japan to develop new techniques, such as creating works with sound and introducing celluloid pictures, which allow for detailed expression. The culmination of these efforts was the operetta-style "Spider and Tulip" in 1943. In the 1960s, the animation stage shifted rapidly from movie theaters to television. At the request of animation studios, Masaoka took charge of training new animators and devoted himself to the development of human resources. Even after retiring from the front lines, Masaoka continued to support TV animation from the shadows. For these achievements, Kenzo Masaoka is known as the "Father of Japanese Animation," and he lived his life alongside the development of Japanese animation.

This exhibition introduces the history of animation from its origins to the present day through rare documents and images, and, with Kenzo Masaoka's footsteps as its axis, unravels the history of Japanese animation from its beginnings to its development.
