Renowned manga artist Leiji Matsumoto, known for works such as "Galaxy Express 999," spent his formative years in Kitakyushu, Kokura, from elementary school to high school graduation, where he made his debut while still in high school. Learning from the culture and atmosphere of Kokura, and encountering various people, he grew up, supported and encouraged, eventually spreading his wings into the manga world in Tokyo.
Despite struggling, he achieved numerous hit works, but the foundation of his success was what he learned in Kokura. In a long interview published in a newspaper in 2016, he stated, "Without the culture of Kokura and encounters with manga and people, I wouldn't be who I am today."
This exhibition commemorates Leiji Matsumoto, who embarked on a journey to the stars on February 13 last year and also celebrates his recent receipt of the "Kitakyushu City Commendation Special Civic Honor Award" by looking back on his youth in Kokura, Kitakyushu City, through photographs, sketches, and anecdotes.
