Ceramic artist GOTO Yumi will showcase her work from exploring and creating sculptures that involve "sandwiching the ground" in between.
GOTO has been known for her innovative approach to pottery work, in which she uses Nerikomi to incorporate the colors and shapes derived from Western Still Life paintings such as Cezanne.
For this exhibition, GOTO turns to the waterscape and the ships that surround it to create vessels, interpreting the scenery in its ceramic form, using the ground as a layer between landscapes and paintings, and by using sand collected from the beaches of Nonoshima and Katsurasima on Shiogama's Urato Island archipelago.
Apart from vessels, original works on display will also include Funadokkuri, traditional sake bottles once served on ships in premodern Japan. "When you think of a vessel as a ship, the way you incorporate the colors and shapes of a ship’s painting into the vessel differs.
