The Heian Ceramics: Their Transformation Through Late 8th to 12th Centuries

Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum
Finished
The Heian period, which lasted approximately 400 years from the end of the 8th century to the 12th century, was the period in which the richest pottery culture in ancient Japan flourished. Heian pottery combined the techniques and forms developed by the Nara period with the designs of prized metalware and Chinese ceramics and underwent multilayered design changes amidst the transition of Buddhist culture.

This exhibition focuses on green-glazed and ash-glazed ceramics, the two major ceramics of the Heian period, and their descendants, unglazed ceramics, and introduces their evolution and characteristics along with related materials such as Sue ware, metalware, and Chinese ceramics of the previous period.
