The History and Life of Fukuoka

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
The Fukuoka City Museum began collecting materials seven years before its opening in 1983, making this year the 40th anniversary of its establishment. Supported by donations and deposits from the public, the museum has collected over 190,000 materials spanning archaeology, history, folklore, and art.

Through research and studies, the museum organizes information, creates catalogs of collected items, and annually shares this valuable information with the public. In this exhibition, approximately 100 carefully selected items from the 3,647 materials collected in the 2020 fiscal year will be showcased.

The exhibition is divided into four chapters: "Pre-Modern Fukuoka," "Memories of Modern Fukuoka," "The World of Festivals and Ceremonies," and "The Work of Artists and Craftsmen." It covers a wide range of materials related to Fukuoka's history and daily life, including ancient artifacts, documents, and scrolls associated with the Fukuoka Domain during the Edo period, photographs depicting life in the Showa era, tools used in festivals, and artworks and crafts depicting the activities of artists and craftsmen with connections to Fukuoka and Hakata.
