The History of Japanese Sword Records

The Japanese Sword Museum
Finished
Japanese swords are now a familiar and much-appreciated part of the arts and crafts world. On the other hand, there have been many more lost items than are currently available, either because they were worn out as practical weapons or were lost due to natural disasters over the long history of Japanese swords.

Today, records are made from the perspective of preserving cultural properties, but historically, objects have been recorded for different purposes at different times. Such records preserve information about objects at a certain point in time, and when the objects are lost, their value is enhanced as valuable materials.

This exhibition traces the history of Japanese sword recording methods from traditional oshigata to the introduction of photographic techniques in the modern era. The exhibition also attempts to consider the significance of the records by tracing the history of the objects recorded, the records accumulated by deceased craftsmen, and the genealogy of oshigata craftsmen.
