Before its opening in 1991, the Hiratsuka Museum of Art established a policy of collecting mainly works by artists associated with Shonan and modern and contemporary Japanese art. In addition, since 2005, the museum has been focusing on exhibitions of contemporary Japanese painting. This exhibition introduces works from the museum's collection by artists who revolutionized the expression of Japanese painting.

Akira Ito (1940- ), Chinami Nakajima (1945- ), and Yoshiyuki Nakano (1946- ) participated in the formation of the "Yoko-no-kai," a group of artists whose activities transcended their affiliations, and who attempted to revolutionize Japanese painting. Later, Aguri Uchida (1949-) created a multilayered picture plane by depicting the distorted and fragmented female body. Norihiko Saito (1957-), whose work is based on the spiritual existence of nature, such as trees and water; Keizaburo Okamura (1958-), whose work is based on Buddhist mythology, and who creates dreamlike images on fired wood; and Makoto Fujimura (1958-), who creates Japanese paintings with Christianity and faith as motifs. In addition, the work of Natsunosuke Mise (1973-), who depicts the urban landscape of modern Japan as a landscape, and Naoko Uranan (1955-2012), who expresses a unique mythological world, will also be featured.

While the theme of animism, which was born out of the need to differentiate Japanese painting from Western painting, is at the bottom of contemporary Japanese painting, some gestures flexibly incorporate and cite motifs from Western art history, and there is no uniformity in the way these motifs are expressed.
