The Legitimate Lineage of Seto Sometsuke Development - The Omatsu and Kosama Families

Seto City Art Museum
Finished
It is said that porcelain production in Seto began during the Temmei era (1781-89) when Kumehachi Kato of Shimohinono learned how to make porcelain from a craftsman, Yushichi Soejima, who had fled from Hizen and studied together with his nephew Tadaharu Kato, who jointly made a trial piece in 1789.

This exhibition displays works related to the "Omatsu Family" and the "Kosama Family," two families that are indispensable when discussing early Seto Sometsuke, as well as pottery shards collected from the kiln site in Sasamachi, Nagasaki Prefecture, where Tamikichi trained, in the hope that visitors will learn about the development of Seto Sometsuke at the time.
